A Day In Aïgues Mortes

A Day In Aïgues Mortes

Along with our family friends visiting us, we traveled to a medieval town called Aïgue Morte, about 1 hour and 30min from our house. Saint Louis began to build the town in 1240 but died before the construction was finished. His son, King Phillip, eventually finished building the town and the enclosing wall but this took nearly 30 years. Access to the  Mediterranean Sea was through a canal, which made the location very strategic for trading during the middle ages. The town, throughout the middle ages, was the starting point for many crusades.

Today, the town has strongly maintained its historic architecture, and it makes a very picturesque place to visit. You can walk the walls that surround the town and see the amazing view of a city that has grown outside the walls of Aïgue Mortes. The pastel pink sea can also be seen, with large piles of salt dominating the sky line.

We also ate at an AMAZING Indian restaurant called Banaras. We know...very random to have Indian food in France! Last summer when we visited Aïgue Mortes we walked by this restaurant overflowing with people, we were unable to get a table so I immediately vowed to come back at some point and eat there. So this time around it was a priority to grab a meal at Banaras. And Oh was I right! The food was divine! The food was an array of colors and spices, that was a somewhat welcome change.

Fully stuffed from our meal, we eventually called it a day and slowly strolled back to our car. We always visit Aïgue Mortes once a year, with its quaint streets and history, it always makes for a successful day trip.
