Our Spring Garden

Our Spring Garden

We are finally tackling our garden this week! We have been wanting to plant our veggies since April, but have held off until the end of Les Saints de Glace. It is local tradition (or superstition) to wait until after Ice Saint’s Day to plant your garden, this is in case there is one last morning that freezes over and kills your plants. This year it was from May 11-13th, so we are in the clear to plant our garden (hopefully!).

This year we bought our vegetables from the plant fair that happens every year in Grospierres. It is one of the largest expositions of plants from the South of France, and is held in a park that is overlooked by the Château de Bournet. We bought everything from organic vendors so that we know the vegetables we are eating are the best available. This year we bought eggplants, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes (serval varieties), beets, arugula, spinach, green beans, and salads.

This year we added horse and sheep manure to our raised garden beds. We have had friends and family members do this in the past, and their plants always grow so large and lush. We are excited to see if we will have the same results this year! Our compost will not be ready for this season of gardening, but we are constantly adding food scraps to our bin so that it can help our plants next year. Let us know what you are planting in your garden this year!
