Burano & Murano

Burano & Murano

While spending a week in Venice, Italy we took a day trip to the islands of Burano and Murano. Only 30 minutes away via water bus, these two places are a must see and make for the perfect afternoon getaway from Venice.

Murano

This island is famous for the glass that it has been produced for centuries. 7 smaller islands that are connected by little bridges make up Murano. As we strolled through the tiny streets, many shops contained artists using Murano glass for some unique creations such as jewelry and sculptures. We ate lunch along the water which was an amazing way to enjoy the warm weather. Finally we stopped at the Glass Museum, which gave excellent explanations on the many process in which to make glass, along with some beautiful examples of the craftsmanship.

Burano

Next up was the island of Burano which is about 20 minutes from Murano. This island is famous for the colorful house that makeup the tiny town. Lace making is also another claim to fame. We also discovered a charming bakery on the island, which made classic venetian pastries - we made sure to stock up on some for our travels home. We only spent about 2 hours here since it was much smaller then Murano, but it was still a beautiful place to walk around and snap some photos of the iconic scenic view.

Both these places made for the perfect day trip, and should be incorporated in your travels if you plan a visit to Venice!
