Transhumance

Transhumance

Sunday morning we drove to the nearby town of Jaujac to see the transhumance of sheep. This is when the shepherds begin moving their herds up the mountains for cooler temperatures and greener grass. This seasonal movement of livestock can take several days to get to the final location, because it is done on foot. Shephards are not the only ones to go up the mountains with the herds, locals and visitors are allowed to follow if they are ready for the hike ahead of them!

Sunday was the departure day for the transhumance, so the town of Jaujac held a festival. There was live music, a food market, and dancing. As you can see in some of the photos several of the sheep have colorful pom poms on their heads, this is a decoration used for the celebration. Many sheep also have symbols or letters on them, to identify which heard they belong to. The event was a very unique experience, and we were so excited to be apart of it!
